Right-click an image on a website, choose “Save image as,” and increasingly what lands on your hard drive is a .webp file — not the .jpg or .png you might expect. Most modern sites serve WebP now because it’s smaller and loads faster, which is great for the website and mildly annoying for you the moment you try to actually use that saved image somewhere else. Drop it into an older version of Photoshop, paste it into a Word document, try to set it as a desktop background on an older system, or upload it to a print shop’s website, and there’s a real chance it just gets rejected or refuses to open. This tool takes that WebP file and converts it to PNG — a format basically everything from the last two decades understands — so the compatibility problem disappears.

WebP isn’t new, but plenty of software still treats it that way

WebP is a Google format built specifically for the web: it can compress images either losslessly or lossily, it supports transparency, and file-for-file it usually beats both JPG and PNG on size at a comparable visual quality. Technically it’s a strong format. The catch is adoption outside the browser. Browsers themselves have supported WebP for years now, so viewing one online is never an issue. But plenty of desktop software, especially older versions or less actively maintained programs, has no idea what to do with a .webp file. Print shop upload portals, some PDF-creation workflows, older photo-editing suites, and a fair number of “upload your image” widgets across the web were built assuming JPG or PNG and simply weren’t updated to recognize WebP’s file signature.

PNG, by contrast, has been around since the mid-1990s and is about as close to a universal standard as image formats get. Practically nothing rejects a PNG. That’s really the whole case for this conversion: not that PNG is technically superior to WebP, but that it’s the safer, more universally accepted choice when you don’t know exactly what the next piece of software in line is going to require.

A few situations where this comes up

Someone building a slide deck or a printed flyer grabs a handful of images off various websites for reference or inclusion, and half of them come down as WebP. Their presentation software or the print shop’s upload tool doesn’t recognize the format, and now every one of those images needs converting before the deck or flyer can go anywhere. It’s a small, tedious problem, but a common one.

Freelancers and small business owners run into this constantly when clients send over “here’s the logo/photo from our website” — which, saved straight off a modern site, is often WebP — and the deliverable needs to go into a tool that only speaks JPG or PNG. Older Android phones and older versions of Windows Photo Viewer can also choke on WebP entirely, so someone trying to just look at a saved image outside the browser may find it won’t open at all until it’s converted.

And then there’s the print and PDF-workflow case: a lot of print-production software and some PDF generators were built around a narrower set of accepted formats and never got updated for WebP, so a graphic that displays perfectly fine on a website needs to become a PNG before it can go into a printed document.

What actually happens during conversion, and what to expect

Because your browser already knows how to decode WebP — it renders these images on websites every day — this conversion is really just handing that decoded image back to you in a different container. Your browser reads the WebP data the same way it would to display it on a page, then repaints it and saves it as PNG. If the original WebP had a transparent background, that transparency is preserved in the resulting PNG, since both formats support an alpha channel. Nothing about the visual content changes; only the wrapper around it does.

One thing to keep in mind: if the WebP was saved using lossy compression (common for photos), the pixel data already reflects whatever compression choices were baked in when it was created — converting to PNG locks in whatever quality that WebP already had rather than magically restoring anything. That’s normal and expected; you’re not losing anything further in this step, just changing formats.

No installs, no uploads, no waiting

You can add several WebP files at once if you’ve got a batch to get through, and each one downloads separately once it’s done. The whole conversion happens inside your browser tab using your browser’s own image-decoding engine — there’s no server processing your file in the background, so there’s nothing to wait on and no copy of your image sitting on someone else’s storage afterward.
