Every photo taken on a modern phone comes out enormous by web standards — 3, 4, sometimes 8 megabytes for a single shot, because the camera is optimizing for print-quality detail, not for how the file will actually be used. Most of the time that detail is wasted: you’re uploading it to a marketplace listing, attaching it to an email, or posting it somewhere that’s going to display it at a few hundred pixels wide anyway. This tool re-encodes JPG, PNG, and WebP files at a lower quality setting so the file shrinks — often dramatically — without a difference you’d notice on a normal screen.
How compression actually shrinks a file
JPG and WebP are lossy formats, which means the encoder is allowed to throw away image data that’s unlikely to be visually noticeable — subtle color gradients, high-frequency detail in busy areas — in exchange for a smaller file. The quality slider on this tool, which runs from 10 to 100 and defaults to 75, controls exactly how aggressive that trade is. Higher numbers keep more detail and produce bigger files; lower numbers compress harder and start to show it, usually first as soft blotchiness around sharp edges or in areas of flat color like a clear sky. Seventy-five is a reasonable starting point for most photos — a solid size reduction with no visible quality loss at normal screen size.
PNG is a different story, and it’s worth being upfront about it: PNG is a lossless format, so there’s no real quality dial to turn. This tool still re-encodes PNG files, which can trim some size through more efficient compression than however the file was originally saved, but don’t expect the same kind of dramatic shrinkage you’ll see on a JPG or WebP photo. Where this actually saves people trouble
Upload limits are the most obvious trigger. Marketplace sites, forums, and application portals routinely cap image uploads at 2MB, 5MB, or some equally arbitrary number, and a phone photo can blow past that before you’ve even started editing it. Rather than fighting with your phone’s built-in export options or emailing the file to yourself to shrink it somehow, you can drop it in here, pull the slider down, and get something that clears the limit in a few seconds.
Page speed is the second big reason, and it matters more than most site owners realize. A blog post or product page loaded with five or six full-resolution phone photos can take noticeably longer to load than the same page with properly compressed versions, and slow pages lose visitors, especially on mobile connections. Running images through a compressor before uploading them to a CMS is a five-minute habit that measurably speeds up a site.
And then there’s the simple, unglamorous reason a lot of people end up here: they’re out of phone storage. Years of full-resolution photos add up fast, and before doing a big backup or clearing space, batch-compressing a folder of images down to a fraction of their original size is a quick way to buy back gigabytes without deleting anything.
Getting the most out of the slider

- Remember PNG won’t shrink dramatically no matter where the slider sits — that’s the nature of a lossless format, not a limitation of this particular tool.
- Check the preview sizes before downloading everything; it only takes a second and saves you from re-uploading a still-too-large file.
All of this happens locally, using the image-encoding engine already built into your browser — nothing gets uploaded anywhere to be compressed on a server somewhere. That also means there’s no waiting on a slow upload for a big batch of files; the only limit is how fast your own machine can process them, which for a handful of photos is usually a matter of seconds.
